Type Locality and Naming

Along the village of Gissar, Tupolang River basin, Tajikistan. G.Kh.Salibaev, 1967 (399, p.42), in the rank of layers. Stratotype in the Tupolang River area, near the village of Gissar.

Synonym: Gissarak Horizon, Гиссаракский гор.


Lithology and Thickness

Clays and sandstones, limestones in the lower part. Up to 100 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lies unconformably on the Turkestan-Sumsar Horizon

Upper contact

Overlain by the Shurysay Fm.

Regional extent

Western Tajikistan, southern slope and southwestern spurs of the Gissar Range. Correlated with the "r" horizon of K.P.Kalitsky's scheme (213), corresponds to the lower part of the Kyzylchin Fm. G.P.Kraydenkov (246) includes these deposits in the Shurysay Fm layers.

Fossils

Contains marine bivalve mollusks - Tellina nysti Desh., Polymesoda convexa Brong., Callista bajsunica Varenz.-Man., Cyrtodaria angusta Nyst. et West., Lentidium georgiana Zotova; gastropods - Ptychopotamides margaritaceus Broc., ostracods - Citheridea schirabadensis Mand., Cypridopsis sp.

Lower Oligocene. In the Strat. layers (444) it is distinguished in the rank of layers and is attributed to the Lower Middle Oligocene.
